Listen in and/or watch to get LIFESAVING TIPS on mastering Type 1, Type 1.5 or Type 2 diabetes from Robby and Cyrus, the  New York Times best selling authors of the book, Mastering Diabetes.  Their program has changed the way people manage and reverse the disease. If you or someone you know has diabetes, DONT. MISS. THIS!  Of course, please share this blogpost as this information is both life-saving and life-affirming.

4:35 There are many different types of diabetes so the way to distinguish between the two is what is autoimmune and what is not. Type 1 and 1.5 are autoimmune. Type 1.5 diabetes is adult onset after the age of thirty where Type 1 usually happens in young children or adolescents. Insulin resistance is the first domino in the onset of Type 2 diabetes, followed by pre-diabetes. Type 2 diabetes, as well as pre-diabetes, is reversible through lifestyle changes. You cannot reverse Type 1 or Type 1.5 diabetes but you can manage it and Robby and Cyrus wrote all about this in their book Mastering Diabetes. You can also learn more about it on their website.

12:50 “The biggest misinformation in the world of diabetes health is that you should avoid carbohydrate rich foods because they will spike your blood glucose levels, they will spike your insulin levels and your diabetes will get worse.” Diabetes is one of the few chronic diseases you can self-monitor on a meal by meal basis. Cyrus says that people “have chosen to eat themselves into a state of insulin resistance and if they choose to eat themselves out of that state they can easily metabolize delicious carbohydrate rich foods.” Insulin resistance is caused by consuming excess dietary fat. Insulin is a master hormone. It’s the hormone that promotes more fuel uptake and storage than any other hormone in your body. So if the cells in your liver and muscle block it, then when insulin is present these cells can block more energy from coming in.

22:00 People who consume high fat diets over a large period of time can develop insulin resistance. Cyrus talks about how the word “sugar” that our society uses is too broad. He is not advocating for people to eat more crystalized table sugar, but the sugar in fruit, starchy vegetables, legumes, and whole grains are metabolized differently than table sugar. You want whole food carbohydrates and it can get confusing for people to understand what they should and shouldn’t eat so in Cyrus and Robby’s book they divide foods into green light foods, yellow light foods, and red light foods. The green light foods are fruits, starches, beans, lentils, peas and intact whole grains like wheat and quinoa. The yellow and red light foods are foods that are higher in fat that you should limit your intake of. Trans fats, specifically, are the worst kind of fats.
